It is with sadness that we tell you all that our friend Stoli passed away last month. It has been a very tough time for his family and the whole Discovery team. Stoli was more than just a mascot, but family. Everyone will miss his smiling face on the boat and in the shops and especially jumping off the boats to join the divers and snorkelers in the water. We are sure he is up in dog heaven now swimming all day and may he rest in peace.

Hey everyone. Sorry for not posting a blog in a little bit, but we have been very busy and I have had to work extra hours. The downturn in business that we were expecting due to the perceived political climate never really happened and we have been running our tails off as the boss gave some of our instructors some much needed time off this month to go back to their homes and get some time off before the busy high season. Thailand and especially Koh Samui is as safe as ever and people are starting to realize that and we have seen a huge uptick in bookings for the coming months.
On top of that, the conditions have been really good now with Sail Rock back to that 25-30 meter viz this week that make sit one of the best dive sites in the world. On top of that, we have our new shop in central Chaweng going full tilt now with a huge selection of diving and snorkeling equipment. Also, all of our staff will be back from their vacations this weekend and rested up and raring to go for the high season.

Stoli’s Koh Samui Diving Blog
Hey everyone. For today’s guest blogger we will have Eric. He is going to talk about boats and boat maintenance. Before we get to Eric, I will talk a little bit about what is going on here in Thailand and at Discovery Divers. It has really calmed down here politically and it is so normal here now that we don’t really here much of anything on the news anymore. Now they have lifted any curfews in pretty much all areas except for Bangkok so a great time to find some deals on airfare and hotels and come to Koh Samui. Remember, on the Gulf of Thailand side it is not rainy season like on the Phuket side. The weather will be great here right up until November. We may have a little system coming in on Thursday for a couple of days, but then that clears right out and the diving has been great. Here is Eric:
Hi, today I am going to talk about what might not be the most exciting topic, but a very important one. Boats and boat maintenance. Here at Discovery, we are one of only 2 companies on Koh Samui who run our own speedboats. The rest of the companies either run on the bigger, slower tourboats, or they all share space on a speedboat from a speedboat operator.
When you have your own boats it is very important to do regular maintenance. Especially when the diving spots are all 1 hour or more away from Koh Samui the last thing you want is to be on an unreliable boat. When you choose a diving company you want to make sure that you can safely make it to your destination and back. Outboard boat engines are very expensive and go through a lot with the seawater, waves and etc., so it is very important to keep them maintained. While in the water and when we are using them daily we make sure that our captains, Aon, Aong and Nan, inspect and clean the engines daily. Sometimes when you are diving you may see one of our captains in scuba gear under the boat at the dive site checking the underside of the boat. Don’t worry, he will be back on the boat to take us all back. If you hang out a little bit after your dives, you will see them doing this at the pier. We also make sure to change the engine oil, filters, and gearbox oil more frequently than normal guidelines just to be extra careful.
Also, 2 times a year we take our boats out of the water in low season to do a full inspection of the whole boat and look for anything that may need to be touched up for fixed. As we have 2 boats we can perform our bi-annual full maintenance and still keep one boat in the water to use for diving. We just got done with our Discovery boat and have that back in the water now and have just taken our our Stoli boat as you can see in the picture.
After our inspection there is not much to do on Stoli as it is only about 7 months old, but we be touching up the paint, especially on the bottom, touching up any outside paint and doing a full maintenance on the engines so everything will be in tip-top shape for high season which is just around the corner. We know it is very important to our customers to make sure that you are on a safe and reliable boat and you can be assured that we take this very seriously. Stoli’s Koh Samui Diving Blog
Ok, so now the instructors (human instructors that is) are giving weekly instructional tips so I think it’s time to hear from Stoli. Today I am going to talk about how to choose a good dive site for the day. I will list a few items which are very important in choosing the site:
1. Have a site near a beach and not rocks. It is much easier to find a nice spot to pee or poop for me in the sand. Ever try to lift a leg and balance yourself on a wet rock?
2. If possible have it close to a snorkel site. Snorkelers tens to leave food unattended while they are in the water. Good for me!
3. Try to stay on the leeward side of the land where the waves will be lower. It is very hard for me to get on my kit in big waves as you can see in the picture. Also, I got to get 4 legs on the ladder getting back on the boat.
4. And finally, look for other dogs in the water. That is a sure sign that you are at a great dive site.

Stoli’s Koh Samui Diving Blog
Hey Everyone, Stoli here. Now that the curfew has been lifted, the Boneyard is back open for business, so since I will be out at my favorite bar again I am going to let some of our instructors fill in for me and we are going to start our weekly guest blog writers who will be giving tips on different diving skills and programs.
Our first guest writer is Nicola. Nicola has been with us for about 2 years now and is our lead instructor. She is originally from Germany and speaks fluent English and German. She will be talking today about 1st time divers.
“Wow! That was the best experience of my Life!” – believe it or not, “we” (dive instructors) hear this often from our first time divers and I love it! I mean, how can you not love your job when other people keep telling you this was better than anything they ever did before?!
If you are a diver already you probably still know how it felt for you. Taking your first breaths underwater, feeling absolutely weightless for the very first time, being inside the big fish tank except of just floating on top … seeing and exploring all those new things that were hidden below the surface before. Remember? Were you excited? Or maybe even a little scared? Or were you one of those that just did all this as if it was the most natural thing in the world?
Well, I personally was quite nervous before my first diving experience. I wasn’t scared, but I did have a good amount of respect for that whole thing called “Scuba”. I can’t remember too many details anymore, but I do know that I was absolutely amazed when I finally blew my first bubbles! I remember I couldn’t really believe this, but yes – it was working, I was able to breathe! And I had so much fun!
And this fascinating, beautiful and peaceful world down there didn’t let go of me anymore, so I decided to become a dive professional myself. That was about 7 years ago.
Now, one of my favorite courses to teach is the Discover Scuba Diving (DSD). It’s an introduction course for first time divers to see what the fuss is all about. It’s a one day experience, also for people that simply don’t have enough time to do the full Open Water Course. DSD means you will get a detailed briefing from your instructor about important facts like pressure changes, equalization techniques, underwater communication signals, a few important rules. Of course we also explain the dive equipment so that you understand what the heck you’re wearing there and how this all works. Then we take you into shallow water and after taking your very first breaths below, you practice a few skills and then the dive can begin, all the way down to a maximum depth of 12m! And all this of course under the direct supervision of your instructor. The DSD is a great way to find out if you get hooked too! Most of the people a taught so far (and that’s hundreds by now) simply LOVED it. And some of them even looked like they’ve never done anything else before in their lifes.
Well, some of them, not all of them! 😉 Of course, not everybody is a “natural” in scuba diving from the first moment on. And thank god for that, because we would miss out on all the funny stuff our job has to offer too, like watching “newbies” rolling around, figuring out that whole buoyancy thing, getting hand signals that simply don’t make any sense, students that start imitating everything you do, even if it’s just a sneeze… I once had a bold student imitating me tying my hair back. Funny stuff, indeed.
And – of course we’re also dealing with some hesitation, anxiety, fears. Very normal and very understandable! And honestly, working on overcoming those fears, being creative and flexible in my teaching methods to accommodate learning difficulties or hesitation, that is what gives me the “kick” in this job! Nothing is better than seeing those huge smiles, the big reliefs and the absolute happiness and excitement in people’s eyes after solving their issues together. Being involved in such a great first time experience truly is a gift and it does make me proud of being a Dive Instructor. Of course I also enjoy all the other parts of my job – teaching full beginners courses, advanced courses, diving with certified divers …. It’s a great variety in our job, especially here at Discovery Divers! But if you ask me what I enjoy the most, I would tell you this: Being the one that introduces you into this entirely new world with entirely new rules and entirely new sensations. Being the one that gets to see your first big smiles about all this, the shine of happiness in your eyes, the pure excitement and of course the big hugs after your first diving day out 😉 … priceless, really!

So today I am working in the new Chaweng shop. Looking out for customers. It’s a lot of fun working here as there are a lot of people going by on the street and this is low season. I can’t imagine how busy I will be when high season comes around. I had to stay off the boat today as I had a late night at the Boneyard with Deng Mo and Tang naam. Remember everyone that here in Koh Samui we do not have a curfew so you can come here and do some partying and some diving (not on the same day of course). In fact here on Samui it is pretty normal. There is no army around and everything is calm and peaceful It’s also great that a lot of the hotels have dropped their prices and some great deals out there.
Speaking of great deals, we are offering 15% discounts on all internet booking for fun-diving and PADI courses. Maybe if you have been thinking about taking the PADI open water course or the PADI advance open water course now is a great time to do it as prices will never be lower. You can even come and stay in my Stoli guest house if you like.
The diving is still great here. Today we were at Koh Tao and visited Chumphon Pinnacle (15 meters), Mango Bay (15 meters) and Au Luek (10-12). We had a big group of Discover Scuba Diving students as well as some experienced divers who went to Chumphon. Everyone had a great day. I want to start out talking a little bit about Thailand and the current situation here. I want to assure everyone that traveling and staying in Thailand now is very safe for humans and dogs. There has been a lot of international press and warnings, but I can assure you that especially Koh Samui is very safe and we don’t even have a curfew here, so you can enjoy our beautiful and fun island the same as it has been.
In addition, now is the best time to book and come to Koh Samui. Many of the hotels are offering incredible deals right now and airfares are dropping also. In addition, we here at Discovery are offering a 15% discount for internet bookings for the month of June. I hope this does not come out of my bone fund. So, the diving has also been great this week and not very crowded, so a good time to dive also. Yesterday we were at Sail Rock which had about 15 meters visibility and the day before we were at Chumphon Pinnacle (15 meter) and shark island (15 meters).

Hey Everyone, I’m going to start by giving you my top 5 reasons the army coup is good.
1. With the curfew our customers are not out late so showing up bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning
2. With the tv stations off the air, I don’t have to sit through the God awful Thai soap operas at night with my mom
3. With the bars closing at 10 I don’t spend my money on bar dogs that hand out at The Boneyard late at night when I am drunk
4. We have to close the new shop at 10 now. Home earlier for me 🙂
5. No TV, no late nights at the clubs, everyone might as well go diving with Discovery
So back to the diving. We’ve had a few great days here and even had our first whale shark in about a month on Tuesday. The weather has been great during the day, with some storms later in the afternoon, but with our fast Discovery speedboats, we are already back home safe and sound by then.

Sorry peeps. I have been so busy lately I have not had time to do my blog. So many things have been going on here so let me fill you in. Not only have we been crazy busy everyday running our boats to Sail Rock and Koh Tao as the conditions are still great and we are getting so many people who want to dive multiple days. We also now have opened up our new shop in the center of Chaweng and I have been working there everyday booking dives and selling lots of equipment. We also have had some guests at my Stoli guesthouse, but are not fully open there yet as we have been so busy opening the dive shop. The new shop has turned our traditionally low season into a mini high season as we are still very busy. Today though we are taking the discovery boat our for it’s regularly scheduled maintenance and full check-over to make sure everything is perfect for the upcoming high season. It will also give Captains Nan and Aong some much needed rest as they have been running the boat almost everyday for a long time. Of course I can always drive the boat in a pinch. We still have our Stoli boat in the water though so we will be running just one boat for the next few weeks as when discovery goes back in the water we will take the Stoli boat out and give Captain Aon and asst captain Pop a break. If you get down to Samui anytime soon, please come visit us at either of our shops at the Amari hotel, or the new shop in Central Chaweng near the new Central Festival Shopping Center. Man still busy, busy, busy. I have been running my tail off between all the divers we’ve been having, and getting my new shop up and going. Check out our new signs that just went up and I am sure you notice the handsome guy on one of the signs. That alone should be enough to bring in all the customers. We also had our first guests at Stoli’s guesthouse this week and they are very happy and even extended their stay for 3 more nights. Make sure to inquire about our dive and stay packages that we now offer in conjunction with the Amari Palm Reef and Stoli’s gueshouse. I really like the sound of that.
The diving has still been unbelievable and we are so busy from divers wanting to book extra days and seeing all the spots we have here in the Gulf. We’ve been going to Sail Rock daily where the visibility has been 25-30 meters, Chumphon Pinnacle which has been about 25 meters and all of the other dives sites around Koh Tao which have been 15-20 meters. This is some of the best diving we have had in years and you need to come out and enjoy it with us.
Congratulations to Jessica who completed her PADI open water course with Arno, Charlotte who completed her course with Nick, and Torie and Kenny who completed their open water courses with Joe. Also, Kristian who completed his PADI advanced open water with Nicola. Great job everyone.

Yes, finally I got the call to go on the boat. Not for diving, but as a snorkel guide. Hey, I love snorkeling anyway and what a great way to spend the day guiding the snorkelers around. We had two boats yesterday, one to Koh Tao and one to Sail Rock. I was on the Sail Rock boat with two snorkelers and we had a great time. I showed them all the good spots to see fish and corals on the rock and got some extra swimming time in between dives for myself too.
Sail rock was awesome for the divers too yesterday with 25 meter viz and tons and tons of barracuda, fusiliers, giant morays, white-eyed morays, and the biggest grouper I have ever seen! What a monster. Koh Tao was really nice also as we went to the wreck on the first dive and shark island on the second.

Finally, I got a day to go on the boat. We had a trip to the Angthong Marine Park today, one of my favorite places in the world, and I was put on the schedule to go. Unfortunately, I forgot to set my alarm clock and overslept. I cannot believe this has happened to me. Eapecially after I saw all the pictures from the day and saw how much fun everyone had. The gang did one dive at Koh Yippon and went in and out of all the caves and saw tons of fish, sting rays, lionfish and so much more. then they went into the main marine park and went swimming, snorkeling and kayaking. I am the best kayaker of course as I have 4 arms to use. I’m like 2 people! I hope my dad isn’t mad and not put me on the boat anymore for oversleeping. I guess we’ll see.

OK, enough of this. I am going on strike if I cannot get out diving soon. I have been working my tail off here at the shop. And what do they pay me with? Bones! Who pays people in bones? I have been so busy that I even had to get my little brother Jagger to help with the inventory. And what does he do? He jumps in a bin of t-shirts and starts playing instead of counting. Some help he is.
It is even worse for me because the diving has been so great. Yesterday we had 2 boats again, one to Koh Tao and one to Sail Rock. Koh Tao sites are down in visibility a little to about 12-15 meters, but Sail Rock is an amazing 30 meters with tons of fish. Put me on the list please for the next opening. Today we had our Koh Tao boat visit the wreck which was a lot of fun and the Discovery boat was back at Sail Rock again.
Congratulations to NIco and Chantal on completing their open water courses. I am heading over to Tesco now to get signboards and markers for the picket line.

Hey Dudes,
I know we are busy here at the shop, but I still found time to start a new career. I am going to be managing a few Muay Thai fighters here in Koh Samui. I am pretty well known as a fighter myself, so I think it is time to pass along my knowledge and skills to other dogs. Of course, to be a good manager and promoter I need to look the part. So, I am going to start wearing my hair like my idol Don King. I figure if it worked for him, it will work for me.
On to the diving. Yesterday we had both boats out again with Stoli boat going to Chumphon and Koh Tao and Discovery back to Sail Rock. Chumphon was a very nice 20 meters with tons of fish and huge anenome fields. Our second dive was at Shark Island where the viz dropped down a bit to 12 meters, but still a lot to see including turtles. Sail Rock is still outstanding with 15 meter visibility. Today we went with two boats to Koh Tao and Stoli went to Chumphon with 30 meters viz and our second dive was at Twins which was nice with 10 meter viz. Discovery did the first dive at Green Rock which was 10-15 meters and was to Lighthouse with viz about 6-10 meters.
Congratulations to May, Kai, Brad and Frank on completing their PADI open water courses with Axel and James and to HK and Peter completing their advanced open water course with Seb. Great job everyone.

Sorry, I haven’t wrote my blog in a few days, but we’ve still been really busy at the moment. Even my brother Jagger has had to work to keep up. So, now we got the whole family working. It’s great when we have these excellent diving conditions and our biggest problem seems to be accommodating everyone who wants to dive again and again. So, on Thursday we had one boat to Koh Tao and one to Sail Rock and the same on Friday. Both days we went to Chumphon Pinnacle and had great conditions of 25 meter visibility. Sail Rock dropped down a little to about 15 meters, which is still very very nice.
Congratulations to Charlie and Ling who completed their open water course with Mike, and to Einar who completed his advanced open water course with Nick.

Another day that I did not make it on the boat. We are very busy now, and because we limit the amount of divers on the boat, I got left off. Again. I thought I was the boss! I mean seriously, I only weigh 13 kilos. I’d be happy to sit in the icebox if I have to. Not fair at all. I think I will have to go into the computer and cancel out some people for tomorrow to make room for me. I hope no one catches me doing this.
Today we had two boats again. The Discovery boat was at Sail Rock with 25 meter viz and Stoli went to Koh Tao where we visited HIn Wong Pinnacle (20 meters), Mango Bay (18 meters) and Shark Island (20 meters). Everyone was happy, happy, happy as usual and many divers wanted to book again. I think we need to re-think our policy. It seems if they have a great time they book again and then I can’t go on the boat. I will have to fire all of our staff and get staff that is not as good so we have more space for me. I am not sure if my Dad will go for that though.
So, today Mike was with Jane and Charlie for dives 1 and 2 of the open water course, Ankita and Radhika were taking their first underwater breaths with Axel, and congratulations to Rachael on completing her open water course with Joe.

What a waste of time. I spent all day doing my taxes and then I forgot that I was not in the US anymore. On top of that, I forgot that dogs don’t have to pay tax anyway. I can’t believe that I spent all day inside doing that instead of going diving the last two days. Especially after seeing all the pictures of how much fun everyone had the last couple of days.
Yesterday we had two boat to Koh Tao. One boat went to Chumphon Pinnacle and Shark Island, and the other boat went to Mango bay and White Rock. Chumphon had about 20 meters viz, and Shark Island about 12-15. Maybe Bay was a beautiful 20 meters and White rock about 15. Tons of Marine life at all the sites as you can see in the pictures.
Today we had the Discovery boat to Sail rock, which was amazing at 25 meters and Koh Tao where we visited mango bay and Twins. both great.
Congratulations to Colin, Matthew and Johannes in completing their advanced open water courses with Steve and congratulations to John and Shen completing their open water courses with James.

Daily Woof April 12
Happy Songkran everyone, or as they say here “sawadee pee mai”, which means happy new year. Looks like the fun has started early here as I just walked outside the shop here in Chaweng and got soaked by a bucket of water. We will be closed tomorrow so our staff and myself can enjoy the festivities, which here on Samui are pretty much massive water fights mixed with some mild (haha) alcohol consumption. The Discovery gang will be celebrating at our pier in Bangrak if anyone wants to come join us.
So to wrap up our last day of diving this year we had one boat to Sail rock and one boat to Angthong Marine Park today. Angthong was spectacular with 12-15 meter visibility. We had a fun mis of divers and snorkelers and we did our diving at Koh Yippon lek, and Koh Yippon Yai. When we get this kind of conditions and visibility the marine park is one of the best sites in the area. Tons of fish and caves and swim throughs. Sail Rock was a good 15 meter today with the usual suspects of giant morays, white eyed morays, batfish, fusiliers, trevally and so many more.
Congratulations today to Birgit on completing her deep adventure dive, Katrina on completing her open water course. Katrina just came back to the shop soaked already. We also had 6 people doing discover scuba with us today who all had a great time.
As I am off tomorrow I will be heading to the dogpound with my crew Deng Mo, Tong naam, and maybe even Andra tonight for some doggy cocktails and chasing some tail.

Still getting ready for Songkran, but all of our divers are getting wet already so I guess what is the big deal. I’ve still been very busy at the shop as with the great diving conditions we are having now we have many more customers wanting to dive than we have room on the boats. I hope this goes on forever, but I do need a break.
So today we had two boats again. One to Sail Rock and one to Chumphon Pinnacle Koh Tao. It seems like a broken record as all the dive sites were about 20 meter visibility and very calm seas. Also, so many fish around as you can see by the pictures. We had a very busy day with courses today. Daily Woof April 10
Ok, as we are sold out until Tuesday, I found some time to get out of the office and get myself ready for Songkran. For those of you who don’t know about that, Songkran is the Thai new year which is on Sunday. It is tradition here to have water fights and spraying water everywhere. I just got myself a new super soaker and I am ready to use it. If you are around Samui, come join us at our Discovery pier in Bangrak, but just watch out for me as I have no mercy in soaking you. (with water of course)
It never gets boring talking about the great diving conditions that we have now here. Our Stoli boat went to Chumphon (20+ meters), Mango bay (20 meters) and Twins (20+). We also had someone almost lose their hand to a shark bite. Bood thing we got a picture of it below. I would have kicked that shark’s butt. Our Discovery boat went to Sail Rock where we had about 15-20 meters. Can’t beat this! Tomorrow we will have one boat going to Sail Rock and one to the Koh Tao. We also had a lot of courses going on today. Axel was with Birgit doing her open water, Steve was in the pool and classroom with Kim, Katrina and Rikke, and Nick was in the pool with Jemma and Jane. Daily Woof April 9
Wow! Looks like high season again. Sorry I was not able to do my blog yesterday, but we have been crazy busy. I have been running my tail off booking people for the next few days and I can’t wait for my day off on Sunday for Songkran. We are now sold out until Monday. I have to get my squirt gun out of the closet and get ready. It doesn’t hurt that the diving conditions have been nothing short of awesome lately. Now that the conditions are great we are back to running one boat to KT and one to Sail Rock every day and everyone comes back from the dives booking more dives. Yesterday we went to Twins and White Rock. Both were about 25 meter visibility. Sail Rock was also great with 20 meters, but had a very strong current. Great if you want to burn those calories. Today we went to Lamtien and Shark Island. Both had a bout 15-20 meter viz on them. Congratulations to Andrew on completing his advanced open water course today with Nicola. Great job!

Another great day here at Discovery. We had two boats our today. Discovery boat went to Sail Rock where the visibility was a stunning 25 meters. Lots of barracuda, trevally, batfish, white eyed morays, giant morays and all the other species. Stoli boat went to Koh Tao and we visited mango bay (20 meters), green rock (15 meters), and twins (20 meters). We have some fantastic pictures of today also I’ll attach.

Ok, got big news now for you. The secret project I’ve been working out is done. We here at Discovery are opening up a new shop here in Koh Samui. The shop will be located in Central Chaweng on the beach road near the new Central Festival shopping center. Even bigger news is that we also have connected to it Stoli’s guest house. A 12 room hotel which will be above our shop. We will start offering out dive and stay packages on our website very soon. We will still be keeping our shop in north Chaweng at the Amari hotel where we have been for 14 years already. I’m not sure which shop I’ll be making my home, but I am sure I’ll be bouncing around between both shops if you are coming to see me. We should be opening full on on May 1st. Come by for some great grand opening specials.
Back to the diving. Of course the diving should be 1st as the conditions are absolutely awesome right now. We had two boats today. One to the Marine Park and one to Chumphon and Koh Tao. Chumphon was outstanding with tons of fish and 20-25 meter viz. Mango Bay had 20 meters, and Twins was 20+. Now that I am done with my project I need to get my butt on the boat and get diving. Who knows, maybe tomorrow 50 meters? We had a good mix of Discover scuba divers, advanced open water courses and lot of fun divers.
